I've decided to start a series of posts discussing in detail different essential oils, their medicinal properties,and the best way to use them. I've dubbed this "Weekly Whiff".
I'm starting this series off with some fun Fall fragrances. This week we're talking about Orange.
About Sweet Orange
When I smell Orange essential oil I instantly think about me standing in my kitchen peeling a huge orange. It conjures feelings of happiness and relaxation.
The scientific name for Sweet Orange is Citrus sinensis. Most Sweet Orange essential oils are produced in Israel, Brazil, and South Africa. The essential oil comes from the rind of the fruit using the cold press extraction method.
Sweet Orange essential oil has many wonderful therapeutic properties and should be added to everyone's oil collection. Sweet Orange is:
Analgesic-can help relieve pain
Anti-inflammatory- can help reduce inflammation in the body
Anti-depressant- has been found to be relaxing and inspired the feelings of cheerfulness and vigor.
Antiviral- Sweet Orange is high in the chemical constitute, d-limoline. d-limoline helps activate while blood cells which help fight infections and many aromatherapist feel it may help with overcoming a virus.
Digestive aid- Many feel that Orange can help with gas, constipation, crams, and irritable bowel syndrome, nausea, and vomiting.
Immunostimulant- due to the high percentage of d-limonlene.
Ways to use Sweet Orange essential oil
Because of the antibacterial properties and calming aspects of Sweet Orange I like to add it to my blends when someone in my family is fighting a cold or sickness. Here is a great diffuser blend for fighting off a cold, this one is kid safe, too!
8 drops of Lavender
6 drops of Tea Tree
6 drops of Sweet Orange
4 drops of Cedarwood (Eucalyptus can be substituted for adults or children over the age of 8)
Blend oils together then add 3-5 drops to your diffuser or follow the manufacture's suggestion on how much essential oil should be added to your diffuser.
This blend is also great for a chest rub. Add 1 drop of this blend per 1 teaspoon (5ml) of lotion. Since the Sweet Orange and Lavender are both very relaxing it will help you (or your little one) sleep great!
'Tis the season for junk food! With overeating candy and comfort foods we may all be feeling a bit sluggish in the digestive department. This is a great blend to help fight the bloat.
10 drops of Orange
6 drops of Ginger
4 drops of Roman Chamomile
2 drop of Fennel (not safe for pregnancy, breastfeeding or children under 5)
Blend these oils together then add 2 drops per 1 teaspoon (5ml) to a lotion. Rub on belly and lower back. If you don't have all of these oils then not a problem! All of these essential oils individually will help with digestive aid, but together they are a powerhouse! If you have peppermint then you can sub any of these for peppermint.
I love adding citrus essential oils to my cleaners! Here is my recipe for a clean bathroom- and I have 2 boys!
1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide (or rubbing alcohol)
1 teaspoon dish soap
40 drops of essential oil (see below)
3/4 cup of hot water
My essential oil blend is
15 drops of Tea Tree
15 drops of Orange
10 drops of Lemon or Grapefruit
Add hydrogen peroxide to glass or PET plastic spray bottle, followed by dish soap then essential oils. Give that a few swirls to get it mixed. Add hot water slowly to avoid too much bubbling. Screw the lid of the bottle on tight then give it a shake. Be sure to shake well before spraying. Enjoy!
